Working with you when work hurts
Preventing professional burnout and vicarious trauma in psychologically challenging workplaces
While work can bring fulfilment and meaning to our lives, it can also hurt us.
When our jobs frequently activate our threat systems without adequate support structures in place we are at high risk of burnout and/or vicarious trauma. This can happen through repeated exposure to others’ suffering; working conditions that disable our innate regulatory systems; un-acknowledged neurodiversity needs; or a lack of psychological safety in the workplace.
This can lead to:
Avoidance and procrastination
Emotional exhaustion
Finding work meaningless and unfulfilling
Feeling you're not good enough
Having flashbacks or nightmares about work
Guilt about things you did or didn't do at work
Increased team conflict
Higher sickness levels
Poor employee retention
